Sherpur is the south police station of Bogra district. This old Sherpur city is located about 18 km away from the city of Bogra. This municipality was formed in 1876 a day before the municipality of Bogra. There are many historic monuments in this town, among which the Kherua Mosque is one of the most important ones. This mosque is located in Khondokar Tola village, 1 km away from the suburb. It is believed that the mosque was built around 435 years ago. It is believed that this mosque was built by a person named Abdus Samad under the patronage of Mirza Nawab Murad Khair. No more information could be found behind the naming of the mosque. However, Abdul Kalam Mohammad Zakaria mentioned in his book “Bangladesher Protnoshompod”, that no history was found regarding the naming of the mosque.
There is no word such as Kherua in Arabic or Persian language, but there is the word Khair Gah in Persian, which means inside. Raja Man Singh had set up a fort in Sherpur during the time of Bengal's Subedar. There is no sign of that fort anymore. However, the mosque could have been named Kherua as it falls under the fort. The mosque’s north-south length is 57 feet and the width is 12 feet. The walls of mosque are 6 feet thick. There are four minarets in the four corners of the mosque. Apart from this, the mosque is 3-domed. The construction style of Kherua Mosque is similar to the 60- Dome Mosque. Black stones were used to build the mosque. Various artistic patterns are noticeable on the walls of the mosque. Two rocks were found in the walls of the mosque, which is now preserved in the Karachi Museum of Pakistan. The mosque was neglected for many years. However, in the 90's, the government reformed the mosque. At present, the surroundings of the mosque have been nicely improved. There is a grave in the mosque area, but there is no information about who is buried here. If you wish you can visit this traditional mosque.
